FIFA Pro Clubs: iFVPA Copa America – Knockout Preview

After a LONG and drama filled Copa America last FIFA, the Copa comes back strong and already has had some tough games, including the continued series with Mexico vs USA. The groups have concluded and some very good looking knockout games. Without further ado, here’s a preview of all the iFVPA Copa America Knockout Rounds:

USA vs Canada

This match-up is easily the most enticing of all of the games because it is the biggest rivalry of all the teams in the Copa America (Sorry not sorry Mexico).  There are so many different story lines going into this game that I don’t think I can even get to all of them. Canada still has a stranglehold on the rivalry when it counts, and the USA haven’t been at their best this Copa after losing to Mexico once and tying them another time while also drawing Ecuador. USA was able to manage a 2nd place finish in Group C. USA were heavy favorites going into this tournament and entering the knockouts, they aren’t playing as well as they can, and have the toughest match-up of all the teams. Canada, on the other hand, steamrolled right through their group and didn’t lose a single game while have only given up 2 goals in their 6 games. This match-up is easily the toughest to call.

Prediction:  I see this match-up being tightly contested and potentially having a close score over both legs. USA to me will keep in close but in the end, I think the mentality Canada has over the USA combined with more chemistry will see them through into the semifinals. Canada wins 3-2 aggregate. USA once again disappoint under new leadership.

Costa Rica vs Peru

Peru comes into this match-up not nearly as sharp as they usually are but managed to win their group due to Goal Differential over Honduras. FHz Vallejos 8 once again leads the charge for the Peruvians and has even been scoring more goals than usual. Costa Rica, on the other hand, was dominant in their group but still only finished 2nd to Colombia. Even then, Costa Rica might be sporting the best defense so far with only 3 goals given up in 8 games played. Even with the extra games then still only trail Canada in goals conceded. This match-up will be a battle of defenses and Peru is best known for how many people they have behind the ball defending.

Prediction:  Gonna go with my gut here and say Peru sneaks by Costa Rica with timely scoring. Viva Oscar will be a big factor in the midfield and I think Peru wins on aggregate 2-1 in Golden Goal.

Mexico vs Chile

Mexico is the team to beat right now in my eyes with how well they handled USA in the group stages and then beating everyone else in their path. Chile, on the other hand, is stumbling a bit into the knockouts but they made it and are capable of pulling off an upset here. Mexico has all the talent but haven’t been able to win one of these tournaments in a while. Chile has been able to do enough defensively and if they get an early goal lead against Mexico, they could sit back and be able to hold them off. That scenario is unlikely, but could be plausible. That being said, this is still a major mismatch on paper, and the advantage is easy with Mexico.

Prediction:  Mexico overwhelms Chile in a rout and Viva Pep doesn’t allow Chile to even get on the board. Mexico stomps Chile 3-0 and coasts into the semis.

Honduras vs Colombia

Colombia has come into this competition with revenge in their eyes after being knocked out by the group of death last Copa.  Colombia is easily the hottest team in the Copa right now with 7 wins in 8 games led by leading scorer Posto l 6 l with 7 goals already. Honduras is no slouch, though and nearly topped their group. They are known for being sneakily good, and if lXl Kevinho lXl is playing, they are even better. Colombia is playing at an unreal level right now though and their talent alone can push them into the Semis.

Prediction:  Colombia moves on with their offensive firepower and runs over Honduras. Colombia moves on with a 4-2 victory on aggregate.
