Patch 5.16: The Most Important Patch You Don’t Want to Read

Patch 5.16, otherwise known as the longest patch notes of the year, is a game changer for many reasons and everyone needs to know about it. After playing some games today, and knowing my friends, the majority of people will not read everything in the patch notes. I’m not going to be going through every detail either since that would be pointless, but the most important things you’ll need to know, will be below. If you want more details on any of the changes, please check out the patch notes or any patch rundown video.

The Juggernauts

Darius, Garen, Skarner, and Mordekaiser all received some sort of rework. I’m not going to go by numbers here, just overall changes for them.

Darius: Darius actually becomes a viable pick in the meta after his changes. The biggest changes to Darius are in his overall stats. He becomes a much better late game tank/bruiser. His abilities got some tweaks as well that can help him in a team fight setting much better than he was in. Also helping Darius are the 3 new items that Riot introduced this patch. I’ll get into those later on.

Garen: After the changes Garen is stronger than his previous position. Change to his base stats also help him in the late game as well as in lane. The longer attack range, much like Darius, is going to help them throughout the game. His new ‘W’ ability also helps him scale into a late game beast where he seemed to struggle a lot in the past. “Spin to win”, is also a real thing now because his spin does much more damage in the late game now. The change to his ultimate will also help him take out the biggest threat on the enemy team.

Skarner: Skarner goes from the laughable tier jungler list, to the ‘A’ or ‘B’ tier jungler list. I haven’t seen him in tons of action yet because he finds himself on the ban list all day. His win percentage jumped significantly to 59% today as well. The biggest change to Skarner is the crystals that spawn around the map. When Skarner’s team captures the crystal, Skarner gains movement speed, attack speed, and mana regen within the large area around the crystal. This makes dueling Skarner in his crystal areas almost impossible. These crystals present many interesting situations throughout the game where teams will be fighting over capturing the crystals or use the crystals as bait. No one is laughing at a Skarner pick now.

Mordekaiser: In probably the most interesting update out of all the juggernauts, Mordekaiser now will reside mostly in the bot lane instead of an ADC. His laning phase will be extremely weak, but his scaling will be crazy good after many changes to his base stats. The reason Mordekaiser will be in the bot lane now is because he will receive full experience from minions. He will almost always have a level advantage over the opposing duo lane. Taking dragon as Mordekaiser will also be a huge priority since he can now steal the Dragon’s soul and do with him what he pleases. Makes sieging much easier when you have a giant dragon helping you hit the turret.

New Items

  Dead Man’s Plate (New Item)
Total Cost: 2750 gold
Build Path: Chain Vest + Giant’s Belt + 1000 gold
Health: 600
Armor: 50
UNIQUE Passive – Dreadnought: You build Momentum stacks while moving up to 100, granting up to 60 bonus Movement Speed. Momentum rapidly decays while under immobilizing crowd control effects, and decays slowly while slowed.
UNIQUE Passive – Crushing Blow: Basic attacks discharge all Momentum, dealing 1 bonus physical damage for every 2 Momentum. If 100 stacks are discharged, the damage is doubled; if this attack is Melee, the target will also be slowed for 75% (decaying over 1 second).

What does it mean? Tanks have another option to which item they want to be more tanky. It gives a large amount of health, and a good amount of armor which always helps. The passives allow tanks to move more quickly and slow down their targets. Making it harder for squishies to kite out enemies. This item really helps champions like the juggernauts listed above be able to catch their targets easier and slow them.

 Sterak’s Gage (New Item)

Total Cost: 2550 gold
Build Path: Long Sword + Giant’s Belt + 1190 gold
Health: 500
Base Attack Damage: +25%
UNIQUE Passive – Taking at least 400-1800 (based on level) damage within 5 seconds grants Primal Rage for 8 seconds. (45 second cooldown)
Primal Rage causes your champion to gain increased Size, +25% additional Base Attack Damage, and a rapidly decaying shield for 30% of your maximum Health.
Sterak’s Gage is another item created for the juggernaut-like champions. It helps those champions that like to build tanky, but with a little bit of damage. Garen, Renekton, Nasus, and many more bruiser like champs can benefit from this item. It isn’t the most expensive item either, so if your are building half attack damage and half tank, this item is what you want.
 Titanic Hydra (New Item)
Total Cost: 3300 gold
Build Path: Tiamat + Giant’s Belt + 400 gold
Health: 400
Attack Damage: 50
Base Health Regen: +100%
UNIQUE Passive – Cleave: Basic attacks deal 5 + 1% of your maximum health to your primary target and 40 +2.5% of your maximum health as physical damage to enemies in a cone on-hit (your primary target does not take this damage).
UNIQUE Active – Crescent: Cleave’s damage to all targets is increased to 40 + 10% of your maximum health as bonus physical damage in a larger cone for your next basic attack (20 second cooldown).
This item is the tank version of Hydra. Instead of life steal and damage, you are opting for health. Once again another item geared to those juggernaut-like champions. I can see certain junglers like Jarvan IV picking up this item as well.

Other Item Changes

  • Magic Resist as a whole is cheaper. Null-Magic Mantle is cheaper, so every item that builds out of that is going to be cheaper for the most part. It is easier to itemize against ability power since it is cheaper now. Full AP teams will not hit as hard early now.
  • Another big change is to the Aegis and the items it builds into. The Aegis of the Legion is now 300 gold cheaper. The aura is not as strong as it used to be, but being much cheaper allows supports to rush Aegis early on and be able to turn it into a Banner of Command or a Locket much quicker. This will allow for supports to bring much more to team fights at an earlier stage of the game.
  • The armor items in the game are also seeing a little bit of changes. Frozen Heart is not as strong or cost efficient as it used to be and Randuin’s Omen now helps out more against opponents that have crit in their kits.
  • Righteous Glory is also a bit cheaper and that will help supports like myself that ball out on a budget.
  • Last big item change is the Juggernaut enchantment for junglers. It now gives more health up front, but losing scaling into the late game. It will still be a strong item in my opinion and tank junglers are not going anywhere.

Miscellaneous Champion Changes

  • Ahri’s passive heals for less
  • Alistar’s Headbutt is slower. Combo will be easier to land and makes the ability easier to react to.
  • Elise’s ‘Q’ in human form hits for less damage.
  • Kassadin’s Riftwalk now scales with ability power. Oh snap.
  • Kayle’s basic attack damage was lowered by 5 AD.
  • Lee Sin’s passive restores more energy after first ability. Kicking tanky people into others hurts more.
  • LeBlanc’s Distortion now has quicker missile speed. RIP me.
  • Lissandra’s ult now heals her when she casts on herself.
  • Lucian’s ‘W’ is better and his passive scales better into late game.
  • When Nasus drops the cane on someone, the next auto attack gains a little bit of extra range.
  • Nami’s passive gives more movement speed now and her ult makes any of her teammates in it run faster.
  • Rammus got a buff on his ‘W’ damage
  • Rumble’s ult cooldown was nerfed. Less people melting on the Equalizer.
  • Stepping on a Teemo shroom now gives vision until you are done getting high.
  • Twitch’s Ambush cost a little less mana and his ult does a little bit more damage.
  • Viktor’s core item now is weaker early, but stronger late game.
  • Vel’Koz will be able to hit a ‘Q’ more quickly now. Harder to react to now.
  • Volibear now has a flash of lighting around him when he hits R. Kind of like Aatrox’s ult when you hit it.
  • Zac’s slingshot is even longer now. Great.
  • Zed can reactivate his ultimate in 0.5 seconds now instead of waiting a whole second. The unseen half a second is the deadliest.

That was a lot even for a shortened version. Shows how big of a patch it really is. Do your fellow summoners a favor and read up on the patch notes ladies and gentlemen. Now we’re done.
